Secret Detox Drink Recipe (A Natural Detox Drink Recipe)

(4655)

If you are feeling weighed down and sluggish, it may be time for my secret detox drink, which can help cleanse your body and make you feel rejuvenated. For many years, I’ve added detox drinks to my health regime because as toxins leave my body, I feel clear-headed and energized. Plus, recipes like this one don’t require a blender or juicer, so they are simple and easily accessible.

Want to learn how to detox your body? Use this simple beverage recipe that takes only minutes to prepare and includes key ingredients for natural detoxification, including lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, ginger, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. It’s both refreshing and energizing, so give it a try today for the little boost we all need from time to time.

Why Drink the Secret Detox Drink?

Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the everyday chemicals that threaten your health, especially when they’re hidden in our clothing, furniture, soaps and shampoos. On top of that, we are constantly exposed to environmental pollutants, and dangerous chemicals in our foods like heavy metals, pesticides and preservatives.

In order to avoid toxic overload that will leave you feeling fatigued, moody, bloated and achey, it’s a great idea to use detox drinks to help cleanse and purify your body.

Key Ingredients

My secret detox drink contains some of the best ingredients for detoxification. Apple cider vinegar has shown to improve your metabolism and digestive function, while working to cleanse your liver and lymphatic system.

Lemon juice has an alkaline effect on your body and helps to regulate your pH levels. Drinking lemon water, or adding it to your drinks and juices, can help to boost your energy levels, detoxify your body, keep skin glowing and improve immune function.

Cinnamon, cayenne pepper and ginger contain therapeutic compounds that help to reduce inflammation, aid digestion and boost your metabolism, which is a helpful step toward weight loss. That’s why drinking ginger tea, for example, is so popular. It contains valuable compounds that boost your health and promote detoxification.

An optional ingredient for your detox drink is raw honey. I like to add raw honey to many of my health drinks and detox smoothie recipes because it’s a nutrient-dense natural sweetener. It adds a little sweetness to this drink while nourishing the body with antioxidants.

How to Make the Secret Detox Drink

The first step in making my secret detox drink is to warm 12 to 16 ounces of water.

Now all you have to do is add your ingredients. Start by adding 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your warm water.

Then stir in ½ to 1 teaspoon of ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne pepper.

The last two ingredients are 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of raw, local honey, which is optional, but will add a little sweetness to your drink.

Stir it all together, and your detox drink is ready to enjoy. I like to have it when it’s still warm, but you can drink it at any temperature.

For more intense detoxification, I recommend drinking this detox drink three times daily about 20 minutes before meals for two weeks to flush out toxins. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to cleanse your body and boost your energy, have this drink once a day before breakfast or lunch.

I made this recipe and my husband and I love it. I used to drink a similar drink but it didn’t taste good. The only thing I changed was that I used fresh ginger that I grated instead of dried. I used Bragg organic apple cider vinegar with the mother. I hope these changes don’t affect the health benefits or taste. Thanks for sharing your recipe, very appreciated. 👍

I appreciate this post. I have followed Dr Axe for many years, I eat only organics and take care of myself with herbs. I am 78 years old, no wrinkles and healthy, I got hashimottos 40 years ago and started on the natural path of healthy living. I only take a natural thyroid made up by a compounding pharmacy. I do have many allergies but only to junk, chemicals toxin’s etc. I must say this, my Mom who died a few months ago at 107 lived the same way, she never took a medical drug and was very healthy. I always consult Dr Axe website before I try a new herb. Thank you Dr Axe. Continue your good work in natural medicine. We appreciate your website. Carol. PS I also drink that detox drink at times. I have perfect pressure but it drops too low if I drink it continually. Please do not advertise my email address. My phone was hacked and I do not appreciate spam. Thanks.

16 ounces of warm or hot water is a lot to drink at one time. Or can I drink it throughout the day?

I see that this question has been asked before but there are no replies posted which would be very helpful.

I just received this information and will definitely try this drink.

The recipe calls for apple cider vinegar but apple cider vinegar with the mother contains natural probiotics. Removing the mother also removes the threads of probiotic-dense and enzyme-rich bacteria, which might present some health benefits (per a Google search).

You might want to mention that detox can’t properly occur without plenty of complete protein in the diet. Doesn’t have to be meat if some people don’t want that, but cysteine, methionene, glycine and some others (can’t recall) are essential for a successful cleanse, and such supplements are available in capsule form.

Amazing detox. I have a question: after I drink 3 times a day for 2 weeks, I transition to one time a week. For how long is it recommended to drink 1 time a day? Is there a min and max timeframe? My friend in India drinks similar detox all year round every day each morning. Can I drink this detox all year round every morning?

Take 1 cup before breakfast and 1 cup before dinner. I do not put cayenne, too spicy for me. Good luck.

I’m having a 🤦‍♀️ moment. For a few years I drank something similar almost every morning. Life gets in the way sometimes and I was traveling back and forth from Michigan to Florida taking care of my mom. I just never good back into the routine.

I would mix 2 caps full of ACV, ground ginger, cinnamon, cayenne, turmeric , raw honey, and a drop of black pepper essential oil. Never thought about adding lemon juice! I would add about 4 ounces of warm water and drink it down and slam (gently) my glass on the counter like back in my “doing shots” days.

I drink lemon water through out the day with either basil, cucumber, frozen pineapple or papaya, clementine section or lime added. So refreshing.

I’m getting back to my old habit, Pronto ! This could be why I’m feeling sluggish, foggy and bloaty the last year or so!

    Thanks, Dr. Axe!

Dr. Axe, will Turmeric work O.K. instead of cinnamon? When I ingest even the smallest amt. of cinnamon, my throat starts to close and I get walloped with giant hives. Isn’t there ANYTHING out there that is not in the cinnamon family (like Cassia or other family members) that I can use to help lose weight? None of the “hard”/nut/bark-type spices agree with me, so I rely on Turmeric, Ginger, Garlic, Vanilla, some other herbs and Berries for most of my flavors/spices.

I am so frustrated with how NOTHING diet-wise has worked for me to date…intending to read Sara Gottfried’s book pretty soon and try her “diet” to reset hormones, but am questioning if that is yet another impossible dream like all the exercising and all the REST of the lose-weight ideas I have tried for the last 7-8 years! ARRRRGH!! (Yes, I am post-menopausal.)

It sounds like you have an allergy to cinnamon. Don’t delay, especially when your throat starts to close. It

I noticed that the recipe in the 28-Day Secret Detox Plan is different from the one you published online. The Plan doesn’t add any cinnamon or Stevia. I just wanted to point it out or maybe somebody else has commented on the recipe differences. I like the Ceylon cinnamon and have added that in but I don’t add the Stevia. I must say by adding the cinnamon, it sure makes getting the drink down a whole lot nicer! Thank you for all that you do!

With all the things I’ve always known about ACV….especially the antifungal properties, and that Lemon is very good for detoxifying the LIVER, etc. with all of this….I feel like I got a huge pat on the back.

I’ve been doing the daily probiotic every morning for about 6 months now.

I’ve finally decided to just drop all GRAINS…for me, it is a must. with a week of that I’ve already dropped two pounds.

I’ll now use the ACV/LEMON drink daily. i had no idea it could help with weight loss!

    Dr Axe,

I have multiple questions. First, I have started Trim Healthy Mama and they state not to use Honey as it raises blood sugar levels and can interfere with glycemic levels? I had already ordered the Wedderspoon you recommended to use occasionally…I do not want to if it will interfere with weight loss, so I have been using it on my daughters acne for an overnight treatment?…Also since I have started the plan they have an E meal that is up to 45 g of healthy carbs, of brown rice, quinoa, ezekial bread, sweet potato, etc…how do you feel about this? I am afraid to put on weight as I have been low carb for quite awhile now. I thought I had read that you preferred to limit the bread to very sparingly? I use most of your products as far as supplements, protein powders, etc, but I am confused at the different point of views. I respect your opinion and do your burst training and i love it and your recipes, but I do want to be doing what is best for me and my health and I also have been extremely bloated and gassy..(sorry tmi) but it is embarrassing and uncomfortable…it is from my body changing the way I eat? maybe to much fiber?I want to loss weight not gain and there is so many conflicting opinions… I’m torn on my health and I desperately need your input. Do you feel switching my fuels as far as fats and carbs can be a great lifestyle plan and possible help me loose this 10 lbs I want to get rid of?
All info you give me is MUCH appreciated and your time as well!

I’m on my eighth day of this detox. The first few days I had a headache after drinking it (which encouraged me because I knew the detox was working). But the past several days my throat started hurting. I kept drinking, but cut out the pepper to see if that helped. Then I cut the amount of ACV to one tbs. But this morning it hurts to swallow. The pain is in the tonsil area.

So how in the world does one get it to dissolve? Oh, btw, I have found you all so helpful with a chock full of info. Thanks a bunch!

It depends on the person and what their diet is like. If they are eating lots of probiotic rich foods and drinking coffers and fermented beverages then I would do greens. If they are getting lots of diverse vegetables frequently in their diet but no probiotics, I would consider the greens. It also depends on health concerns as well…Both are great!

I found this formula (minus the cinnamon which I will now incorporate) elsewhere on the internet and began drinking it a week or so ago. I just found your site and am amazed at your patience and dedication to getting the correct info out to all who inquire. I’m going to be a regular visitor to this site. I am fortunate to have a great store nearby that carries healthy products and found organic, non gmo, not from concentrate lemon juice which is much easier than squeezing lemons :) and less expensive also. I also found this intense (was only using 1/4 C water) but now I get up in the morning thinking about it first thing and don’t mind the taste at all.
I only have one question – I take Klonapin for anxiety and wondered if this drink could effect that. I resisted medication for years but at a point it became so bad and that was the only solution my doctor gave me – I wish I knew then about natural products to try first and now I’m addicted to this and dread trying to get off it. What is your professional opinion of SAMe? Oops thats two questions…..Thank you for all you offer to those who want to live a healthy and natural lifestyle. At 67 I’m just getting more serious about losing weight, exercise and improving my eating habits (which fortunately were fairly good until now). Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions you might have for me.

I also think home made Sauerkraut with yoghourt whey, kombucha and Kefir + a quality probiotic tossed in as the starter helps detox the body and cleans and feeds the digestive system. Has done amazing things for my whole system to elimination.

This is terrible tasting. I was hoping this would be tolerable for me but it wasn’t. I made it exactly as directed. took a sip with a straw and it was horrible but I wanted to push forward and see if I could come to tolerate it since I had a similar thought when I first tried kale. I hated that too but now use it frequently and it doesn’t bother me anymore. However, after the first sip of this that almost made me gag, I waited about two mins and took another, a bigger sip but not anywhere near a mouthful and it was bad. I still pushed forward and after a few more minutes I took another drink but this time I gagged and almost puked. I ended up accidently spitting it out and then almost puking again. I wish I could drink this or even add something to it so it tastes even half better since I was wanting to see if this would have any benefits for me but I jus cant. Ive never even had medicine make me almost puke.

I personally drink a spicy lemonade every morning and it is such a great way to start the day! I also do the master cleanse about 3-4 times per year which has helped me on so many levels because it allows the digestive system to rest and the body to heal and detox itself while the brain and body gets plenty of glucose. Very powerful and spiritual experience that changes the body’s chemistry for the better. The Complete Master Cleanse book explains it in detail since it has to be done correctly and one has to be prepared for it. Then can also add in things like enzymes, bentonite, psyllium, etc. Definitely need to use fresh squeezed room temp organic lemon juice for the most enzyme content.
2 tbsp fresh organic lemon juice
2 tbsp organic grade B maple syrup
    1/8 tsp cayenne
    1 cup filtered water
My body craves it now :-)

I know you are to drink this 1-3x daily, but for how long (days, weeks, life) (with rest periods/cycles)? I am looking to detox from sugars and heard ACV is a way to go! So how long does this detox take to start seeing a difference?

This is something that you can incorporate for a time or as a lifestyle. I personally drink this every day because of the health benefits. It’s hard to say exactly when you will see results. It all depends on how much sugar was in your diet before, how much candida is present, if you have leaky gut, etc. I would start drinking this and take it one week at a time. Watch how your body feels, if symptoms are resolving, etc.

How does this blend and the detox process affect leaky gut? Conversely how does leaky gut affect the detox process/benefits?

What about subbing lemon and cinnamon oils in this? If so how much would you do? I just noticed how much the cinnamon does not want to “mix” in.

Confused as recipe says stevia not honey and yet comments talk about honey and other sugar based sweetener. Also is it alright to use normal cinnamon?

You can add in raw honey in place of stevia if you’d like otherwise just stick to the recipe. I think that ceylon cinnamon is best! Here is why: https://draxe.com/nutrition/health-benefits-cinnamon/

I have been drinking this for some time now. But I use local honey and “Wholesome Sweethers” Organic Molasses Unsulphered (blackstrap). I use the molasses to give me iron due to being extremely tired in the morning and all through the day. Is this ok? If not then what do you recommend I use? I don’t like nor want to be tired all day long any more. I have a 7 year old I homeschool so I need all the energy I can get. Thank you for your help. By the way, as far as exercising I am exercising just about every day. I am also 197 lbs. I used to weigh 210 lbs. Thank you for what ever help you can give. Have a blessed day and hope to hear back from you soon. :-)

I would follow the protocols outlined here: https://draxe.com/health/psoriasis-diet-5-natural-cures/
I also think following the GAPS diet could be very beneficial for you:

This is very similar to the detox drink that you have with turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon and ginger. Do you happen to have that recipe that I can share with my friends since I’ve been telling them about it. Even my husband takes it. I think it’s a keeper and I’d like my friends to benefit also.

I just tried this and “went” right away… Like almost immediately.. I used raw honey and did not experience any urgency or cramping. I just felt like I needed to go, but not in a hurry. I’m going hi drink it a few times a day on tomorrow.

I’m curious as to the type of cinnamon you’d recommend using, as the recipe calls for 1 tsp per drink, and I read somewhere that one should have 2to3 drinks per day. I’ve been reading that the cinnamon typically widely available in the U. S. has high levels of coumarin. It is my understanding that coumarin in high levels can cause liver damage. Please specify what type of copinnamon is healthy ipat 3 teaspoons a day on a regular basis. Thank you.

Why is agave not a good option? I do not like honey at all, and always substitute agave for honey, thinking that if I use organic raw agave it is not harmful. Is there a health reason that I should not use this instead in this recipe? Thank you.

I don’t recommend using agave because it is highly processed thus lacking nutrients, can contain pesticides, void of natural enzymes, some contain HMF which can have carcinogenic effects, and others. Check out this article on honey to see the health benefits of consuming it, especially in place of agave: https://draxe.com/nutrition/the-many-health-benefits-of-raw-honey/

I have been reading about drinking Borax (1 tsp. dissolved in 1 quart of water and then adding 1 tsp of this solution diluted in one glass of water) to help with candida, hormone imbalance, etc. have you ever heard of this and do you think it would be helpful or dangerous?

Just thought I would add the web sites I found the information about drinking a borax solution on. Health-science-spirit.com and Growyouthful.com.

Three times a day for life? Or how often when you have reached optimal health?

I realize that these are all good and natural ingreedients, BUT in combinations, I still need to find comfort in asking if it is ok to drink while nursing.

I cannot take the Maximized Living Detox because of nursing (according to my ML Doc) BUT I am 3 months into my ML advanced plan, have over come some mental obsticals of depression and anxiety, but think there is some deep detoxing I still need to do, and have 4 months of nursing I am trying to complete. Thanks so much!

You shouldn’t need to stay near a toilet apple cider vinegar works over time… according to earth clinic it should be “sipped on” all day long. Do not put apple cider vinegar in hot water as it kills the enzymes (microwaves especially!!). Also to avoid tooth issues (enamel brake down.. because of the acidity) use a straw and swish water in your mouth after drinking. (don’t brush teeth immediately after drinking as this will erode your teeth even more so!)

I made it with green tea instead of just water, so its warm. But overall it doesn’t taste bad at all, just spicy in a good way.

I buy the Ceylon cinnamon at our local Health Food Store…and then grind it up in my coffee grinder to a fine powder…good stuff !

      • Richard Harper on

I order my pure, ground cinnamon from Ceylon. On researching when I started taken honey and cinnamon every morning, I found that Indonesian cinnamon has elements that are harmful over time. Ceylon Cinnamon does not have these problems. It is fairly inexpensive ($32 for a 1 lb. jar), but will last, probably a year, using 1 tbsp. per day. I get a brand directly from Ceylon with the brand name of DRUERA. It takes about a week to get delivered to the U.S., as I remember.

When I first started taking it, the site recommended making a tea out of the mixture, but you will find that cinnamon does not dissolve well, at all. So I just mix the cinnamon and honey (I buy mine at Whole Foods because it comes from the state in which I live – if you have a Whole Foods nearby, you might want to check to see if it comes from a local producer, if not seek another source for you area honey). It is best to get honey locally, if possible, because the plants from which the bees get their pollen to make honey, protect you from any allergies to any of those plants the bees use – also, their honey is raw. DO NOT USE PROCESSED HONEY – MANY OF ITS PROPERTIES ARE KILLED FROM PROCESSING.

I’m trying this. What should I expect? If I drink this mixture do I have to be aware of anything like…STAY CLOSE TO A TOILET or any such advice? Or is it more like a boost to my system?
Thanks for all your health tips!

No, you will not have to stay close to a toilet. Your pee might smell a little bit, but no worries that is just the bad stuff being cleansed from your body.
I always add a little honey to the mixture because it is very good for your throat and vocal cords.
Another option is to drink it without the water, like a shot. It might burn a little going down, but it’s quick and does the job.

Just wondering if one should stay away from apple cider vinegar if they have systemic candida, due to it being fermented. (Chronic Nuerological lyme, systemic candida, and other opportunistic infections). While i probably need this drink most, in general fermented foods gives me a candida flare up. Yet, i heard of people drinking ACV w/ candida. Just wondering if it is contraindicated for me…or should b good. Thanks.

Most people do fine with it but listen to your body. If you notice flare ups when consuming it, then don’t. Also check this out: https://draxe.com/health/candida-symptoms/

In response to Nechamy and questions regarding candida and apple cider vinegar. In my own experience, I suffered with candida for 10 years and for the last 5 of the 10, I wasn’t even able to eat a cookie or piece of cake at a family party. I had no sugar be it fruit or otherwise for 5 years. I spent thousands of dollars on all of the “candida” fighting supplements and my diet was perfect. I too had been told Apple Cider Vinegar would help with candida and for me it only exacerbated the symptoms and made everything worse. Then about 6 months ago I found a product called CANDIDA CLEANSER. It has been life changing. The candida is all gone and for the first time in 5 years, I was able to
celebrate Christmas with my family and eat cheesecake. and chocolate chip cookies. I used to feel hopeless sometimes but I always knew God would bring me through somehow. The great thing about the Candida Cleanser is you only have to take one bottle and that’s it. I now take apple cider vinegar everyday for healthy looking skin and hair. Just wanted to share my experience and let you know there is hope for ridding your body of candida.

      • SuperHealthy on

Nechamy, the best solution to get rid of your candida is to consume pure, virgin, organic coconut oil. Take one teaspoon per day for a week, increase to two spoons the next week, one in the morn, one in the eve. If it makes you feel terrible at first, it is because it is removing the candida, so just take the one teaspoon full of coconut oil at night, but keep doing it. Take this regimen for two months and your intestines will be cleared of the candida overgrowth.

    • Lisa Heikoop on

In my experience, Apple Cider Vinegar has always helped to relieve my candida symptoms. This is the first drink I’ve come across where I can drink it without gagging. I’ll also soak in an apple cider vinegar bath when symptoms get unbearable for me. Make sure you use Apple Cider Vinegar “with the mother” like Bragg’s and don’t put it in the fridge.
I think ‘staying away from fermented foods’ is old information. I finally have gotten rid of Candida when I introduced fermented foods to my diet, especially kefir. You don’t only want to kill the Candida, but if you flood your gut with good pro and pre-biotics, it will eventually keep your candida under control.
